Highlighting hair is lightening sections beyond the base color. You may associate highlights with blonde, but highlights can be any color if they are lighter in contrast to the surrounding hair. You can have warm black hair with subtle dimensional highlights only one shade lighter.
Lowlights and highlights go hand and hand. Lowlights produce extra depth and can bring back dimension lost during highlighting. Sometimes highlights can lighten your overall color too much and lack depth. Lowlights can restore contrast.
Full highlights include lightened sections all over from the top of your head to the nape of your neck. This method can produce heavy and dramatic highlights or soft and subtle looks too.
Whereas full are your full head, partial highlights are half your head, typically applied to the top half and sometimes sides. Partial highlights are less expensive and time intensive. Often, partial highlights are used to create sunkissed-highlights and frame your face.
An experienced stylist will help guide you down the right path. A typical approach is alternating between full and partial between visits.
Depending on your look, this service may be high maintenance. Full heavy highlights up to the root have harsher grow out. You will visit your stylist every six to eight weeks to retouch highlights. The balayage method is a bit more forgiving as your stylist blends lightness approaching your root.
Balayage is a method of applying highlights. It’s our most requested color service. Balayage is a freeform method of painting hair typically done without foils but sometimes in combination. Balayage gives the appearance of soft, natural, lived in highlights and that trademark sun-kissed brightness around the face. That said, balayage is quite capable of bold looks ranging from ombre to vivid rainbow hair. If you have a recent inspiration picture, it’s likely balayage.
Highlights are expensive. Take care to protect your investment. Color-treated hair requires extra hydration to remain healthy. Especially with the high upkeep of full highlights. We are Bumble and bumble dedicated carrying a focused selection of hydration products.
