What are partial highlights
Partial highlights focus on specific sections of your hair rather than the entire head. Most commonly, your stylist will place foils through the top layers, the crown, and the face-framing pieces. The underneath stays your natural color. The effect is brighter, more dimensional hair that looks natural because, well, half of it still is.
This is the most popular color service at The Hair Standard by volume. More clients book partial highlights than any other single color technique we offer.
Partial vs. full highlights
The difference comes down to placement and coverage.
Partial highlights target the top half of your head and the pieces around your face. They're ideal when you want a noticeable change without going all-in, or when your natural color underneath is close enough to blend. You're in the chair for less time, and the cost is lower.
Full highlights place foils throughout your entire head, including the underneath and the nape. You get more uniform lightness, more dramatic lift, and an overall brighter result. This is the better choice if your goal is to look blonde, not just sun-kissed.
Not sure which one you need? Your stylist will assess your starting color, your goal, and how much maintenance you want. Many clients start with partial and move to full over time.
What to expect
A partial highlight appointment typically takes 90 minutes to 2 hours, depending on your hair length and how many foils your stylist places. The process includes a consultation, foil placement, processing time, a toner to refine the shade, and a blow dry.
Most partial highlights start at $115. The final price depends on your hair length, thickness, and the number of foils needed. Your stylist will quote you during the consultation before any color goes on.
Maintenance
Partial highlights grow out more gracefully than full because the contrast between highlighted and natural sections is softer. Most clients come back every 8 to 12 weeks for a refresh. Between sessions, a toner at the 4 to 6 week mark keeps the brightness from going brassy.
If you want even less maintenance, ask your stylist about a soft, rooted placement. Pulling the foils slightly away from the scalp means the grow-out line is virtually invisible.
Book your highlights
Whether you're doing highlights for the first time or switching from another salon, your stylist will start with a consultation to look at your hair and talk through what you want. Book a highlights appointment and bring reference photos of the brightness level you're after.
