What platinum hair actually takes
Platinum is the lightest you can go. It means lifting your hair to a pale, almost white blonde with little to no warmth left. It's striking when it's done well and damaging when it's not. The difference between those two outcomes is almost entirely about the stylist.
Getting to platinum usually requires multiple sessions, especially if you're starting from dark hair. Your stylist will lighten gradually over 2 to 3 appointments, giving your hair time to recover between sessions. Trying to go platinum in one sitting is how hair breaks. A good colorist won't let that happen.
The process
Your first appointment starts with a consultation. Your stylist needs to see your hair in person to assess the starting level, any previous color or chemical history, and the overall health of your strands. From there, they'll map out a plan.
Each lightening session involves applying a professional bleach to lift your natural or existing color. After lifting, a toner is applied to neutralize any remaining warmth and dial in the exact shade of platinum you want. Cool and icy, warm and creamy, or something in between.
Depending on your starting point, expect to invest 3 to 6 hours across your initial sessions. Once you're platinum, maintenance appointments (bleach retouches) are shorter, typically 2 to 3 hours every 4 to 6 weeks.
Maintenance is non-negotiable
Platinum is a commitment. Your roots will start showing within 3 to 4 weeks, and because the contrast between your natural color and platinum is dramatic, regular retouches are essential. Most platinum clients come in every 4 to 6 weeks.
Between appointments, you'll need to:
- Use a purple shampoo 1 to 2 times per week to prevent yellowing
- Deep condition regularly (your stylist will recommend products specific to your hair)
- Avoid excessive heat styling, or use a heat protectant every time
- Schedule a toner refresh if your shade starts pulling warm before your next retouch
Cost
Platinum is one of the more expensive color services because of the skill, time, and product involved. Initial sessions to get you to platinum will vary based on your starting color and how many appointments it takes. Ongoing bleach retouches start at $150. Your stylist will give you a clear estimate during the consultation so there are no surprises.
Is platinum right for you
The honest answer is: it depends on your hair. If you have fine, virgin hair, the transition is easier. If you have previously colored, thick, or coarse hair, it takes longer and requires more care. Your stylist will tell you what's realistic during the consultation. Sometimes "platinum" means getting to a beautiful icy blonde that's one or two levels warmer than true platinum, and that can actually look better and feel healthier.
Book a bleach retouch if you're already platinum. If you're starting from scratch, request a consultation so your stylist can see your hair and build a plan.
